The Mayan called the underworld Xibalba. For the ancient Mayan, caves were portals into that realm — places where the boundary between the living world and the spirit world was thin enough to cross. Actun Tunichil Muknal was one of those places. Archaeological evidence shows that Mayan priests brought offerings deep into the cave, including ceramic vessels and obsidian blades.
Fourteen human skeletal remains have been found inside ATM Cave. The best known is the Crystal Maiden, whose calcified remains have fused to the cave floor over centuries. Visitors see the remains from a respectful distance and enter the protected dry chamber in socks to reduce damage to the surface.
The Trail, the Swim, and the Climb
The ATM Cave tour is physically demanding. The jungle trail from the trailhead to the cave entrance takes about 45 minutes and crosses three rivers. Water depth changes with recent rainfall. At the entrance, you swim into the cave wearing a headlamp. Inside, the route involves climbing boulders, moving through narrow passages, and navigating uneven rock.
The route continues through large chambers with ceramics, stalactites, and stalagmites before reaching the upper dry chamber where the skeletal remains are protected in place.
Plan a full day from Belize City. Eight to nine hours is realistic when drive time and the trail are included. The approach is shorter from San Ignacio. San Pedro and Caye Caulker departures require water taxi coordination, while Hopkins and Placencia departures require an early mainland start.
