The beauty of “La Isla Bonita” San Pedro is its easy access to Belize City by sea (via San Pedro Belize Express or Ocean Ferry Belize) or by air (via Tropicair or Maya Island Air). After you’ve arrived on mainland Belize City by your selected means of travel, you’ll meet and become acquainted with your guide before heading off to see the beautiful Maya Temple of Altun Ha.
Altun Ha is the nearest excavated Maya Temple to Belize City and is probably the most visited temple in the country.
Altun Ha was a wealthy ceremonial center boasting two main plazas and thirteen structures (including the Temple of Sun God or the Temple of the Masonry Altars). Close to the Caribbean Sea, Altun Ha is part of a unique cultural zone along with other coastal sites. There are also no stelae at Altun Ha but the discovery of rich tombs indicates that the ruling elite enjoyed access to substantial amounts of exotic goods.
Another beautiful feature of this site is the large water reservoir called “Rock stone Pond”. The bottom is lined with yellow clay giving the bottom firmness capable of retaining water.
Off to Bermudian Landing!
After spending time with the exotic flora and fauna, you’ll head to the tiny village of Bermudian Landing to visit The Community Baboon Sanctuary.
Founded in 1985 the aim of the sanctuary was to show farmers in the area that protecting the habitat of the Black Howler Monkey could bring sustainability to the village. Your guide will show you the monkeys up close as they scamper in the tree canopies above, and swing across rope suspensions bridges and howl heartily throughout the village.
