All Maya Temples are not built the same. Altun Ha is the nearest excavated Maya Temple to Belize City and is probably the most visited by Belizean school children from all over the country. Altun Ha was a wealthy ceremonial center boasting two main plazas, thirteen structures (including the Temple of Sun God or the Temple of the Masonry Altars). Altun Ha is not very far from the Caribbean Sea, and it formed part of a unique cultural zone along with other coastal sites. There are also no stelae at Altun Ha, but the discovery of lavish tombs indicates that the ruling elite enjoyed access to substantial amounts of exotic goods. Another exciting part of this site is the presence of a large, water reservoir called “Rockstone Pond.” The bottom of this reservoir is lined with yellow clay giving the bottom firmness capable of retaining water. Take the trip to see this beautiful Maya Temple with the wide-open spaces so unbelievably close to the city, and still be back at the hotel for a leisurely afternoon by the pool, sipping your favorite drink. The temples are easily climbed and are not as tall as Lamanai and Xunantunich. After trekking an ancient home of the Maya, take a tour of the present-day city that is the heart of Belize.
Belize City is a lively mix of historical, colonial, and a thriving modern-day society. Its eastern boundary runs along the Caribbean sea, which makes tourism a big part of the city’s economy. It is a cruise tourism port city and boasts two marine terminals from which boats go back and forth between the city and the islands of Belize. Belize City was once the capital of the country, but that changed after Hurricane Hattie when her vulnerability as a seaside city was exposed. The old capital was moved inland to Belmopan, but Belize City has remained the Commercial Capital. It is a vibrant, dynamic city that is undergoing modernization to keep up the needs of its people and its growing tourism market. Enjoy some of the remnants of our colonial history and the landmarks of recent stories that have impacted the changing face of this thriving, vibrant city that sits proudly on the Caribbean Sea. There is more than meets the eye here; your guide will fill you in and point out places of interest, all from the comfort of your air-conditioned van.
