This package is excellent for kids of all ages and adults to learn and explore more of what Belize has to offer. Xunantunich Maya temple (pronounced /Shunantunich/) is an Ancient Mayan archaeological site about 80 miles (130 km) west of Belize City in the Cayo District. Xunantunich is atop a ridge above the Mopan River, well within sight of the Guatemala border – a mere 1 kilometer (0.62 mi) to the west. It served as a Maya civic ceremonial center in the Late and Terminal Classic periods in the Belize Valley region. Belize had a population of nearly 200,000 at its peak. Xunantunich's name means "Stone Woman" in the Maya language. "The Stone Woman" is the ghost of a woman who has inhabited the site since 1892. A fire-red glow emanates from her eyes, and she wears only white clothing. Generally, she appears in front of "El Castillo," ascends the stone stairs, and disappears into a stone wall.
You will continue to the Caves Branch Outpost in the Nohoch Che'en Caves Branch Archeological Reserve after visiting Xunanantunich. Caves Branch River is a few hundred feet from the outpost. Maya rituals were performed in caves along this river.
Personal tubes, a hard hat with a headlamp, and a life vest will be provided by your guide before tubing begins. Your guide will then tell you more about the area's flora and fauna as you hike to the cave. Also, learn about Xibalba (pronounced she-bal-ba) and how the Maya believed caves were the entrance to the afterlife. You eventually reach an underground tunnel. Your guide will review some safety information before you enter the underground river. Afterward, you'll climb into your inner tube and float down the gentle river through the caves. Stalagmites, stalagmites, and crystalline formations give these caves an otherworldly appearance. After you exit the cave, you can free float on the open river.
