Your journey into the countryside of Belize to this magnificent Mayan ruined city built on a ridge and overlooking the Mopan River and Guatemala over to the west. There is a Stella found at the site that links it to the Guatemalan Mayan City of Naranjo.
At the visitor center, you can get an idea of the size and scale of this vast city from a model of the site.
This was an important ceremonial center up until 1000AD. The El Castillo is an impressive 40 meters high with friezes on the east and west walls. The Maya Ball Court is worth some time – the ball games of the Maya are the oldest known team sport in the world! There are temples and tombs and shrines to explore.
A comfortable journey will bring you to the Jaguar Paw Adventure Outpost in the jungle where your next adventure begins. You are given lifejackets, headgear, and an inflatable tube and you follow your guide through the jungle, over two warm streams, and arrive at the cave mouth. Descend the wooden stairs to the river and once settled in your tube your guide will gentle you into the flow of the stream. Glide through this alluring underworld where your guide will point our Mayan artifacts and show where they worshipped.
