Xunantunich Mayan Ruins and the island connection

The schedule starts with a confirmed early water taxi or local flight from San Pedro. Your private mainland driver-guide meets you at the agreed Belize City terminal or airport and travels west through Belmopan into the Cayo District. Water-taxi travel commonly takes about 75–90 minutes each way depending on operator and stopping pattern, followed by roughly two hours of mainland driving toward San José Succotz.

A hand-cranked ferry crosses the Mopan River to Xunantunich, a Classic-period Mayan ceremonial center built on a limestone ridge. The guided visit covers the plazas, temples and palaces, and the carved frieze at El Castillo. The structure stands about 130 feet above the plaza and offers broad views when climbing is open, weather is suitable, and the guest is comfortable with the stairs.

Most visits need 90 minutes to two hours. Expect sun, warm weather, uneven site paths, and optional temple steps. This tour works best for adults, older children, and archaeology-focused travelers who manage long travel days well. It is not a good fit for a late island departure, a fixed early return, or young children who struggle with sustained road time.
