Quick answer: For mainland day trips such as cave tubing, Altun Ha, ATM Cave, Xunantunich, or Lamanai, Caye Caulker is the easier base. The water taxi from Caye Caulker reaches Belize City in about 45 minutes. From San Pedro on Ambergris Caye it takes about 90 minutes, because the boat stops at Caye Caulker on the way. That adds about 1.5 hours of boat time to every mainland day from San Pedro.
For reef trips, both islands are excellent. Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, and the Great Blue Hole can be visited from either one. If you are staying in San Pedro, mainland tours still work well. Start on the first boat, choose tours closer to Belize City, or fly to the mainland on long days.
| Compare | Caye Caulker | San Pedro (Ambergris Caye) |

Most travel guides compare Caye Caulker and San Pedro by beaches, nightlife, and hotel prices. This guide answers a different question we get from guests every week: which island makes tours easier? We are a local, private tour company that picks up guests from both islands. We plan these days around the boat schedule, and the island you stay on changes which tours feel relaxed and which ones become a very long day.
Why the boat ride decides your tour day
Every jungle, cave, or Maya ruins tour from the islands starts with a boat to Belize City. The two islands sit on the same water taxi route, and San Pedro is the last stop. So the ride from San Pedro is about twice as long as the ride from Caye Caulker.
The road part of the day is the same for both islands. Your guide meets you when you arrive on the mainland. From Belize City, it is about an hour to Altun Ha, about an hour or a little more to the Nohoch Che'en cave tubing area, and two hours or more to ATM Cave and Xunantunich in western Belize.
The return boat sets a hard limit on the day. The last scheduled boat from Belize City leaves at about 5:30 PM. A tour that runs late can mean a missed boat, so we plan each tour backward from the boat you need to catch.
Should you fly instead?
Tropic Air and Maya Island Air fly between Belize City and both islands. The flight is short and can save time on long days such as ATM Cave or Lamanai, especially from San Pedro. It costs more than the boat. If you would like to fly, tell us when you book so we can plan the pickup at the right airstrip.
A sample mainland day from each island
Here is how a typical Altun Ha and cave tubing day compares. Actual times depend on the boat schedule and the tour you choose.
| Time | From Caye Caulker | From San Pedro |
|---|---|---|
| Morning boat | Leave about 7:30 AM, arrive Belize City about 8:15 AM | Leave about 7:00 AM, arrive Belize City about 8:30 AM |
| Mid-morning | Guided visit to Altun Ha | Guided visit to Altun Ha |
| Midday | Lunch, then cave tubing | Lunch, then cave tubing |
| Afternoon boat | Back on the island before dinner | Back on the island in the early evening |
From Caye Caulker, you can take a later boat in the morning and still have a relaxed day. From San Pedro, the same day works well, but it starts earlier and ends later.
Best day trips from Caye Caulker
Caye Caulker is the stronger base if you want more than one mainland adventure during your stay. The short boat ride leaves more time for the activities.
Mainland tours from Caye Caulker
- Altun Ha and Cave Tubing from Caye Caulker: our most popular mainland day. You explore a Maya city in the morning, then float through river caves after lunch.
- Cave Tubing and Zipline from Caye Caulker: an active day without ruins, good for families and friends.
- Altun Ha, Cave Tubing and Zipline from Caye Caulker: three activities in one day, which is realistic because the boat ride is short.
- ATM Cave from Caye Caulker: Belize's most famous cave. It is a 10 to 12 hour day, so plan an early boat and a quiet evening.
- Xunantunich from Caye Caulker and Xunantunich with horseback riding: long days near the Guatemala border, with one of Belize's most impressive temples.
Reef and island trips from Caye Caulker
- Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley: Belize's classic snorkel trip, with nurse sharks, stingrays, turtles, and coral.
- Local Shark Ray Alley trip: a shorter snorkel option close to the island.
- Goff's Caye and Calabash Caye: small-island beach and snorkel days.
- Great Blue Hole and Half Moon Caye: a full day out to Lighthouse Reef.
- Full-day and half-day fishing: fishing trips with a local captain.
Looking for Lamanai from Caye Caulker? It is a long day by road and river. Ask us about timing, or look at our Lamanai tour to see what the day includes.
Best mainland tours from San Pedro
From San Pedro, the best mainland days are the ones closest to Belize City. Altun Ha is the closest major Maya site to the city, so it pairs well with a second activity without making the day too long.
Easier days from San Pedro
- Altun Ha and Cave Tubing from San Pedro: our top pick for first-time visitors from Ambergris Caye, at about 8 to 9 hours.
- Altun Ha and Baboon Sanctuary from San Pedro: Maya ruins and black howler monkeys, with little walking.
- Altun Ha and Belize Zoo from San Pedro: an easy day for families and older travelers.
- Cave Tubing and Zipline from San Pedro: a full adventure day without the ruins.
- Altun Ha, Cave Kayaking and Baboon Sanctuary: paddle through the caves instead of floating on a tube, then see howler monkeys.
Maya ruins and long days from San Pedro
- Lamanai and Scenic Boat Ride from San Pedro: a 10 to 11 hour day with a jungle river boat ride, wildlife, and tall temples.
- Xunantunich from San Pedro and Xunantunich with horseback riding: long days to western Belize.
- ATM Cave from San Pedro: an 11 to 12 hour day. If ATM is the main reason for your trip, ask whether a flight or a night on the mainland would make it easier.

Reef trips: is one island better?
For snorkeling and diving, the difference is small. Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley are a short boat ride from both islands. Great Blue Hole trips run from both, with similar travel times out to Lighthouse Reef.
Tours from Caye Caulker are often a little cheaper, and the island's own marine reserve is right offshore. San Pedro has more dive shops and departure options. Either way, the reef is easy to reach. Your choice of island matters much more for mainland days.
Island vibe: which one fits your trip?
Caye Caulker is about 4 miles long, has no cars, and runs on its "Go Slow" motto. You get around on foot, by bicycle, or by golf cart. It is quieter, more laid-back, and usually cheaper for food and hotels.
San Pedro is the main town on Ambergris Caye, Belize's largest island. It has paved roads, beach resorts, a wider choice of restaurants, nightlife, and an airstrip with frequent flights.
Which island should you choose for tours?
- Choose Caye Caulker if mainland adventures are a big part of your trip, you want ATM Cave or Xunantunich without the longest possible day, or you want reef and jungle tours from the same base.
- Choose San Pedro if you want more hotel and restaurant choices and plan one or two mainland days built around Altun Ha, cave tubing, or wildlife.
- Splitting your stay? The islands are about 30 minutes apart by boat. Plan your long mainland day for your Caye Caulker nights, and the shorter Altun Ha days for San Pedro.
- Arriving or leaving that day? Do not plan ATM Cave, Xunantunich, or Lamanai on the same day as an international flight.
