Hopkins
Hopkins Village is a good location to visit inland Blue Hole and Xunantunich Mayan Ruins. In addition, some of the finest Maya ruins in Belize are at Xunantunich. From Hopkins, you drive along the scenic Hummingbird Highway and through the western villages of Belize to the Blue Hole and Xunantunich Mayan ruins. During this cultural experience, you'll get a chance to see the countryside, Mayan Mountains, farms, colorful homes, and the San Ignacio farmers market firsthand.
You'll also learn about the local culture and history and try some traditional food.
A few miles from San Ignacio Town, Xunantunich Maya Ruins are located in the Cayo District near the village of San Jose Succotz. The Mopan River is crossed by hand-cranked ferry in the village of San Jose Succotz. A mile uphill from the other side of the river, you can either walk or drive to the site.
The inland Blue Hole (cenote) is located at St. Herman's National Park on the Hummingbird Highway. An underground limestone cave collapsed to form it. At the bottom of the sinkhole, a sapphire-colored pool is formed by the river running through the original cavern. With a diameter of 300 feet and a depth of about 25 feet, the depression measures 300 feet wide and 100 feet deep.
