Belize Tours from San Ignacio
Saddles & Stones. Experience the Cayo District the way the ancient Mayas did—surrounded by nature. This tour combines the architectural wonder of Xunantunich with a peaceful horseback ride through the Belizean jungle. It is the perfect choice for nature lovers who want to explore the history of the Maya and the flora of the rainforest in a single, relaxed day trip.
We begin with the short drive to the Mopan River, crossing on the iconic hand-cranked ferry. Once across, you will explore the ancient plazas of Xunantunich. Your guide will take you up the 130-foot El Castillo pyramid. From the top, you can see across the canopy into Guatemala, spotting toucans and howler monkeys in the trees below.
After exploring the stone temples, we head to the stables near the river. You’ll be paired with a gentle horse suited to your experience level. The ride takes you through lush jungle trails and local farmlands along the Mopan River. It’s a quiet, sensory experience where you can smell the tropical plants and listen to the sounds of the forest without the noise of an engine.
Ride at Your Own Pace. Big group tours can feel like a cattle drive, with everyone forced to move at the same speed. By booking locally from San Ignacio, we keep the groups small (or private). This means if you want to trot, we can trot; if you want to stop and take photos of a bird, we stop. It’s your ride.

1. Do I need riding experience?
No. Our horses are well-trained, calm, and used to beginners. The wranglers will give you a safety briefing and basic instruction before we head out.
2. What should I wear?
We strongly recommend wearing long pants (jeans or leggings) to prevent chafing against the saddle or brushing against jungle leaves. Closed-toe shoes (sneakers or boots) are mandatory for safety.
3. Is there a weight limit?
Yes, for the safety of the horses, there is typically a weight limit of around 250 lbs. Please let us know in advance if you have concerns so we can match you with the right horse.
4. Can children participate?
Yes! Kids love this tour. Depending on their age and size, they can ride their own pony or be led by a guide. It is a fantastic family activity.
