Inland Blue Hole Belize | St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

The inland Blue Hole, not the offshore Great Blue Hole

The Inland Blue Hole is the freshwater swimming area inside St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park. The park is managed by the Belize Audubon Society and sits on the Hummingbird Highway. It is not the offshore Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef, so this visit does not require a boat or a dive trip.

The blue pool was formed where part of an underground limestone cave collapsed. Cool water from the cave system flows through the swimming area, which is surrounded by tropical forest. Water level, swimming conditions, weather, and park access can change, so current conditions should be checked before the tour.

Correct route from Belize City and Belmopan

From Belize City, travel west on the George Price Highway to the Roaring Creek/Belmopan junction, then turn southeast onto the Hummingbird Highway. The Belize Audubon Society places the park about 12 miles southeast of Belmopan, on the right side of the Hummingbird Highway.

One park, two main visitor areas

St. Herman’s Cave and the Inland Blue Hole are the park’s two main attractions, and an underground stream connects the cave system with the Blue Hole. The park has separate access areas: the St. Herman’s Cave visitor-centre area with trailheads, and another entrance with easier access to the Blue Hole swimming area and changing facilities.

The protected area was declared Blue Hole National Park in 1986. It was renamed St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park in 2005 to reduce confusion with the offshore Blue Hole Natural Monument.

Choose the experience, not just the name

  • Freshwater swim: an open-air nature stop for guests who are comfortable with cool water and natural, sometimes slippery ground.
  • St. Herman’s Cave entrance: visitors may walk approximately 200 yards into the cave entrance without a guide, according to the Belize Audubon Society. A full cave traverse and cave tubing require a hired guide.
  • Combination day: Xunantunich plus the Inland Blue Hole is a longer itinerary with meaningful road time. It works best with an early start and a realistic return plan.

Current hours, fees, guided activities, and cave or swimming conditions should be confirmed from the Belize Audubon Society park information before travel. Private Belize Adventure will identify what is included in the written tour confirmation rather than promise a gate fee or cave activity that has not been confirmed.

Private routes by pickup point

Choose the tour that matches where your day actually begins. Each linked tour has its own duration, pickup plan, inclusions, and price.

How this compares with ATM Cave

ATM Cave involves a jungle approach, stream crossings, swimming, climbing, and movement through a protected archaeological cave. The Inland Blue Hole is an open-air freshwater stop. A guided visit to St. Herman’s Cave adds cave exploration, but it is a different experience from ATM and should not be marketed as a shorter version of the same tour.

Choose ATM when protected Mayan archaeology and a demanding cave route are the purpose of the day. Choose the Inland Blue Hole when a freshwater nature stop or a ruins-and-swim combination better fits the group.

What to confirm before booking

  • Your exact hotel, resort, airport, water-taxi, or town pickup point.

  • Swimming comfort, mobility concerns, medical considerations, and ages in the group.
  • Any fixed return time or evening reservation.
  • The included entrance fees and activities shown in the written tour confirmation.
