About ATM Cave Tour from Belize City
Actun Tunichil Muknal — the ATM Cave — is in the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve in the Cayo District, roughly 90 minutes to two hours west of Belize City on the Western Highway. It is the longest and most physically demanding day in the Belize City catalog. National Geographic named Actun Tunichil Muknal the number-one cave destination in the world — active archaeology, cave formations, and intact Maya ceremonial remains found nowhere else at this scale. Plan 8 full hours from pickup. Not for cruise ship guests.
After the drive west, the licensed guide leads a safety briefing and gear preparation at the trailhead — about one hour from San Ignacio. The cave approach involves three river crossings on foot, then swimming into the cave entrance. Inside Actun Tunichil Muknal, passages are wet, rock surfaces uneven, and some sections require climbing over boulders or moving through low passages. Maya pottery vessels and skeletal remains lie in their original positions — preserved as part of a protected archaeological reserve managed by the Institute of Archaeology Belize.
The Crystal Maiden — a fully calcified human skeleton in the cave’s upper dry chamber — is the most widely known feature inside Actun Tunichil Muknal. In the dry chamber, socks are required over footwear to protect the cave surface. No cameras, phones, or recording devices are permitted inside — enforced by the licensed guide without exception. This is a preservation requirement, and guests who cannot comply should choose a different tour before making a deposit. Xibalba, the Maya underworld, finds its most literal expression in caves like this one.
The return follows the same trail and three river crossings. Time to change and dry off before the drive back to Belize City. The full cave experience — trail in, time inside, trail out — takes four to five hours. ATM Cave suits physically fit guests who are comfortable with river water, enclosed rocky spaces, and sustained effort over a long day.
A licensed Belize Tourism Board guide and private air-conditioned vehicle are included for the full route. Send your travel date, pickup location, group size, and written confirmation of physical readiness to Private Belize Adventure before this booking can be accepted. This is not a tour that can be reserved without a prior conversation about the physical demands of Actun Tunichil Muknal.
What Guests Said
"Due to the tender boat process, we were running pretty late. However, our guide worked hard to still give us the full experience despite our late start. Having this as a private tour was the absolute best way to experience Belize."
"My husband and 2 children genuinely enjoyed the Xunantunich and Cave Tubing tour. I highly recommend this combo tour to anyone looking to explore a new culture."
