Xunantunich and Horseback Riding from Belize City

Xunantunich sits in the Cayo District near the Guatemala border, reached from Belize City by travelling west on the George Price Highway. Adding horseback riding to the ruins visit makes this a full land-based adventure day — no cave water, no zipline harness, just ruins and outdoor riding across the Cayo landscape. The route west passes through Belmopan and on into the Cayo District. Xunantunich is accessed via a short Mopan River hand-cranked ferry crossing at San José Succotz. El Castillo, the second-tallest Mayan structure in Belize at approximately 130 feet, dominates the main plaza. After the Xunantunich visit, the vehicle travels east toward Belmopan to Banana Bank for the horseback activity. This is a separate stop and adds eastbound road time after the archaeological site. The Cayo landscape — river valleys, forest edges, open farmland — gives the ride a different perspective on western Belize than the archaeological site alone provides.
