The main draw is El Castillo, the massive pyramid at the site’s center, which you can climb via stone stairways on two sides. Near the top, a restored hieroglyphic frieze wraps around the structure’s exterior — it depicts celestial figures, Moon Goddess masks, and astronomical symbols in high-relief stucco and carved stone. This frieze is one of the most detailed examples of Maya exterior decoration in Belize and is the feature most visitors photograph closely.

Beyond El Castillo, the site includes several other temple platforms, a ball court, and residential structures spread across the main plaza. The site is managed by the Institute of Archaeology Belize and is open to the public. A small on-site museum displays recovered ceramics and provides context on Xunantunich’s occupation history, which spans the Classic Period.

Getting to the site itself involves a short ride on a hand-cranked cable ferry across the Mopan River at the village of San José Succotz. The ferry is a functioning piece of local infrastructure — it has been operating for generations — and crossing on it is a genuine local experience rather than a tourist novelty.

Who This Tour Is For and When to Come

Xunantunich Belize is best suited for travelers who want a Maya site with more physical engagement — the pyramid climb is real and requires a reasonable level of fitness, though it is not technically difficult. Guests based in San Ignacio (15 minutes away) often visit on half-day trips. From Belize City, the drive is approximately two hours each way, making this a full-day commitment. Guests based on the cayes — San Pedro or Caye Caulker — can take the water taxi to Belize City and transfer to a private vehicle, or arrange pickup from their caye with advance planning.

The site is open year-round. Morning visits are generally more comfortable in the dry season (November through April) and allow you to complete the pyramid climb before afternoon heat. The Cayo District receives more rain than the coast, so bringing a light rain layer during the rainy season is practical.

Cave tubing at Caves Branch is located on the return leg toward Belize City and can be added to make a full western Belize day. Zip-lining is available at several Cayo operators near San Ignacio. Horseback riding through the Cayo countryside is another natural pairing for active travelers. Caracol, the largest Maya site in Belize, is deeper into the Vaca Plateau and typically requires a full separate day.
